On Thursday, Gauteng police pounced on an unwary Zimbabwean who was busily fabricating various documents at his Hillbrow flat, IDs, drivers’ licenses, bank cards, Sassa cards, and travel documents. According to Gauteng Police Commissioner Elias Mawela, officers were conducting Operation Okae Molao in the Johannesburg CBD when they received information about a Zimbabwean national selling various documents from his residence.

“Officers went there and found this person hard at work, busily producing some documents, such as Covid certificates, guns competence certificates, and so on,” Mawela explained. Police discovered printers, scanners, hard drives, and other equipment used to create the unlawful papers inside his flat. Police can be heard asking him where his passport is in a video released on social media. He said, “It’s gone.”

Mawela said it’s unclear whether the individual had previously been detained, but preliminary investigations show he’d been in business for quite some time. “We’ll see if he has any prior convictions,” he said. Since the crime prevention campaign commenced on Wednesday, Mawela noted, they have detained over 800 people sought for a variety of offenses, murder, attempted murder, and robbery.
