‘Obani Lababantu’ Hit Singer Gee Six Fives Passes Away

It’s with great sadness that the death of Mzansi’s latest senior rising star Olpha Selepe also known as ‘Gee Six Five’ was confirmed in a tweet by her niece, former magazine editor Sibu Mpungose.

My beloved aunt, MumNcane who many of you know as #GeeSixFive is no more. She displayed leadership throughout her life, was the epitome of fearlessness & inspired many with her single #ObaniLababantu. Mthiya, Shandu kaNdaba, Sontshikazi. #RIPGeeSixFive Mpungose wrote.

The sudden news has shocked South Africa indeed and the singers five minutes of fame will never be forgotten. The ‘Obani Lababantu was known for her short lived singing career, not to mention her impressive academic career. Selepe has acquired her Masters degree at the age of 63 years old and was currently pursing her Doctorate in education.

The whole of Mzansi has offered their condolences to the family including celebrities who have been sending their well wishes to all those who knew and loved Gee Six Five, making her trend with more than three hashtags dedicated to biding her farewell.

According to a statement from EWN, Selepe died of COVID-19. She was reportedly diagnosed on Monday and passed away Wednesday morning.
