Pitso Mosimane addresses links to Orlando Pirates job amid coaching changes

Former Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Pitso Mosimane has opened up about the reports linking him with the soon-to-be vacant Orlando Pirates job.

The Soweto giants dropped a bombshell earlier this month when they announced that Jose Riveiro will be leaving the club at the end of the season.

The Spaniard has had a somewhat successful time as the club’s coach, and has led them to three MTN 8 titles and two Nedbank Cups. They are currently on course to win a third Nedbank Cup, and have a date with rivals Kaizer Chiefs in the final in Durban next month.

Also, they are putting up a good fight in trying to dethrone Sundowns – who have won seven successive league titles – as the undisputed kings of South African football.

The club have been desperate to win a league title, and Riveiro was thought to be on the right path. Now, with him leaving at the end of the campaign, Mosimane, a perennial winner, has been identified in some quarters as the perfect candidate.

Mosimane, who has won three CAF Champions League titles – two with Al Ahly and one with Sundown – is currently jobless after leaving Iranian club Esteghlal this year.

Addressing the links, Mosimane said he had not spoken to anyone at the club, but left the door open to a possible return to South African football.

“Why not? It must be for the right project. It must be at the right time,” the 60-year-old Mosimane was quoted by the Sowetan.

For now, though, he was fully focussing on Pitso Mosimane Soccer Schools project where he works with coaches to ensure that they do age-appropriate training.

“Let me build a legacy because once I stop coaching, people won’t remember the trophies I won. Let us get the coaches working.

“None of these coaches working for us came through the back door. It’s been hectic because I’ve worked every day, but I couldn’t have asked for more. I’m blessed.”
