As couples around the globe prepare for Easter vacations, a new study has identified the best destinations for LGBTQ+ romantic getaways, with Canada taking the crown as the most welcoming location.
The research highlights the importance of finding environments where love can flourish in safety and comfort, a priority for many LGBTQ+ couples when planning their next escape.
The comprehensive study was conducted by Just, an Australian online retailer focused on adult products, which ranks the world’s most romantic destinations based on a variety of factors, including safety, legal protections, romantic activities available and the presence of LGBTQ+ events.
Each location was evaluated on a score out of 100, with Canada achieving a perfect score of 100.
Canada’s diverse cities, including Hamilton, Montreal, Quebec City, Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver, offer a stunning combination of romantic experiences and progressive values, making it the ideal haven for LGBTQ+ couples.
“Canada offers something truly special for LGBTQ+ couples. Its picturesque landscapes, from the cobblestone streets of Old Quebec City to the breathtaking mountains of Vancouver, create an enchanting backdrop for romance,” says Alexa Johnston, a relationship expert at the online store.
Visiting couples can indulge in everything from wine tastings in Niagara to scenic hikes in Banff National Park.
Canada also stands out with its strong LGBTQ+ community support and an exceptional LGBTQ+ travel index score of 383, which reflects the robust legal protections in place for LGBTQ+ individuals.
Following closely behind Canada is the United Kingdom, securing its position with a score of 97.32.
Cornwall, known for its captivating coastlines and quaint hamlets, emerges as a particularly romantic destination.
Johnston notes the history and charm of the UK, where “hidden coves and breathtaking coastal paths provide intimate settings for couples looking to connect with each other away from crowds.”
Australia rounds out the top three with a score of 94.84, featuring vibrant cities such as Adelaide, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sydney and Darwin.
“Sydney’s famous Mardi Gras celebration is just one example of how the country embraces the LGBTQ+ community.”
LGBTQ+ couples here can experience unique activities, including wine-tasting trips and excursions to the Great Barrier Reef, all while knowing they are in a supportive environment, as evidenced by an LGBTQ+ travel index score of over 304.
The remaining seven destinations on the list showcase the remarkable diversity of romantic getaways available for LGBTQ+ couples.
Sweden (94.61) offers a charming Scandinavian experience with robust protections, while Cape Town (89.44), renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, pairs adventure with welcoming urban settings.
Johnston notes the exciting array of choices: “From Colombia’s vibrant culture (84.35) to Mexico’s rich history (82.59), these destinations exhibit that LGBTQ+-friendly romance is not restricted to any geographical boundaries.”
Malta, Tahiti and Uruguay round out the top ten, each presenting unique allure, from Mediterranean charm to tropical paradise.
“Feeling safe and welcomed is fundamental to building intimacy during travel. The destinations we’ve highlighted allow couples to focus on what matters most, their connection to one another,” says Johnston.
She added: “For couples seeking unique experiences, I recommend looking beyond the typical tourist spots in these countries. Consider a secluded cabin in Canadian wine country, a converted lighthouse stay on Cornwall’s rugged coast, or a private eco-retreat in Australia’s hinterland.
“These intimate settings, combined with the security of being in LGBTQ+-friendly locations, create the perfect conditions for romance to flourish.”
