Bride-to-be calls off wedding after fiancé secretly buys house with his mother

A 28-year-old bride-to-be recently shared her story on Reddit, revealing how her fiancé’s decision to buy a house with his mother led to her calling off the wedding.

The couple, who have been together for five years, were planning their future, including saving for a home, starting a family, and getting married later in the year.

But she was shattered when she found out that her fiancé had bought a house with his mother behind her back.

“Turns out he already bought a house. But not with me… with his MOM,” she wrote.

The fiancé’s mother had found “the perfect place” and convinced him to split the cost, arguing she “didn’t want to rent anymore.”

The woman was blindsided, especially since they had spent years discussing their shared goals. “I just stared at him like… wtf??” she wrote.

When she asked her fiancé where she fit into this new arrangement, he simply suggested she could move in too.

“Like I’m supposed to be thrilled to live in a house his MOM picked out, partially owns, and is just… there all the time,” she added.

He admitted he went ahead with the purchase because she was “taking too long” to save, and his mother offered a “faster way” to own property.

Feeling betrayed and sidelined, she called off the wedding.

“I can’t marry someone who thinks this is normal,” she explained.

However, her decision sparked backlash from both families, with his relatives calling her “dramatic” and her own parents suggesting she overreacted.

“It’s just a house,” they argued, insisting the couple could still live together.

But for her, the issue was deeper. “Am I losing my mind?? AITA or is this a giant red flag??” she asked Reddit users.

Many agreed it was a red flag. “He didn’t just buy a house. He built a whole future with his mommy and left you out of it. That’s not a mistake….it’s a conscious decision to prioritize her over you. And the fact that he thought you’d just move in like a guest in a home his mother controls? Disrespectful as hell,” was one person’s response.

Another wrote, “NTA – He didn’t tell you, he didn’t include you, and he just expects you to live with his mom. You’re an afterthought.”

“You did the right thing. He made major life decisions without including you and the mother thing – you would end up being a third wheel in your own home and marriage. That is no way to start a life together. NTA – Gigantic Red Flag!,” agreed another Reddit user.
