Song-writer Nathi Mankayi was forced to cancel his show that was scheduled to take place on Saturday at Mthatha due to people allegedly demanding a protection fee.

The “Nomvula” hitmaker was set to perform in his hometown as part of his “Silwa Nemimoya Picnic” tour, which began in Durban in June and included stops in Cape Town and Bloemfontein before heading to Mthatha, Gqeberha, and Johannesburg.

The award-winning artist’s promoter reportedly received phone calls from individuals demanding to be paid a protection fee.

“The promoter I had partnered with received phone calls from people saying they wanted money, a certain percentage from the show,” he said.

As a result, Mankayi told the promoter to stop planning the show. He further revealed that he won’t return to Mthatha anytime soon.

“I don’t want to lie, as much as the Eastern Cape is home for me, if such things are going to happen, I’d rather not go home. Anyone else would’ve made the same decision,” he reportedly told the Daily Sun.

“I’m not saying I won’t go there forever, I’m just saying I’ll go there when the time is right.”

Mankayi also shared that audiences in Gqeberha can look forward to healing through his music. He believes his latest album has the power to uplift and inspire others, especially following his own struggles.

The cancellation has sparked a broader conversation about the impact of extortion on the arts and entertainment sector.

Calvin Rafadi, a certified forensic investigator, emphasised that such criminal activities extend beyond artists and event organisers.

“If there was no contract between the parties and these people are demanding money, then it’s extortion,” Rafadi said.

“Not addressing this crime affects the economy, the tourism industry, and the arts industry.”

He added: “This essentially affects the whole of South Africa. Going to an event takes kids off the streets to enjoy themselves, so this affects everyone really.”

Rafadi called for police investigations into these extortion claims, regardless of whether formal cases have been opened.

A police task team is currently addressing extortion issues in the Eastern Cape province.
