After months of eager anticipation, the Maftown Heights Festival organisers have finally announced the date for the iconic event’s return. Set to take place on November 29 at the famous Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown, Johannesburg, this year’s festival promises to be a celebration like no other.
For those who fondly remember the festival’s early days or missed its reign during the 2010s, this is a golden opportunity to reconnect with Motswako culture while witnessing the next generation of talent. The organisers promise a fusion of the past and future, bringing the event’s original fans back together to embrace the new wave of Motswako.
This much-anticipated comeback follows the success of the four-part documentary Maftown Heights Untold Stories, which aired in June 2024. Directed by rapper and Motswako pioneer Khuli Chana, the documentary delved into the festival’s rich history, showcasing its cultural impact. With the overwhelming response from fans, the team behind Maftown Heights decided the time was ripe for a grand return after a brief hiatus.

Known for hosting the finest talents in South Africa, Maftown Heights has cemented its place in the country’s cultural landscape since its inception. Legendary names like the late HHP, AKA, and Riky Rick have all graced its stages, making it a powerhouse platform for showcasing musical excellence.
But 2024’s edition aims to go even further. It’s all about blending tradition with the future, introducing audiences to the rising stars of Motswako, now dubbed the “NuTswako” movement. Leading the charge as festival curator this year is Maglera Doe Boy, with none other than Khuli Chana by his side.
