Actress Demi Moore recently opened up about how she “tortured” herself in order to have the perfect body during her early Hollywood days.
The star, known for her roles in “Striptease” and “G.I. Jane” revealed, during an online interview, that she had placed so much value on her physical appearance.
“I did torture myself, the crazy things of diets and exercise, biking from Malibu and going all the way to Paramount (Studios) and for those who don’t know, it’s about 26 miles on a bike, to work a full day while I had a new baby that I was still feeding through the night.
“Like crazy, crazy stuff, all because I had placed so much value on what my outsides looked like,” said Moore.
However, her perspective on body image has significantly evolved.
Today, she embraces a holistic approach centred around health and well-being rather than just aesthetic appeal.
“The biggest difference today is, for me, it’s so much more about my overall health and well-being. It’s much more about longevity and quality of life,” she said.
“I think I was so harsh and had a much more antagonistic relationship with my body. Straight up, I was really just punishing. I was very punishing in this desire to dominate it.”
The transformative process of acceptance brought a sense of liberation, particularly as she came to terms with the ageing process.
“Now, I have a much more intuitive, relaxed, trusting relationship with my body.
“I stopped trying to control my food, and I had a moment of surrender where I just let go and really understood what it meant to be in acceptance of my body as it is, even though it’s not the body I wanted.”
As she continues to navigate life in her sixties, Moore acknowledges the reality of her evolving physique.
“(There was) liberation in that place of acceptance of my body as someone in their 60s. And it being what it is and it’s not the body that I had at 20, even when I was complaining about the body I had at 20 or 30,” she said.
Moore now listens to her body by eating when she’s hungry and drinking when she’s thirsty.
