What not to wear on a flight: Tips for comfortable air travel

When it comes to air travel, comfort is king.

But while you may be tempted to throw on your cosiest outfit or your most stylish airport look, some clothing choices can actually make your flight more uncomfortable, inconvenient, or even risky.

Here’s a list of what not to wear on a flight and the reasons behind each no-no.

Tight clothing

Airplanes are pressurised, but you still experience changes in circulation and swelling, especially in your lower body.

Tight clothing, like skinny jeans or leggings, can restrict blood flow and increase your risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), especially on longer flights.

It also just gets more uncomfortable the longer you sit.

Instead, opt for loose, breathable layers like joggers, soft trousers, or stretchy fabrics that move with you.

High heels or uncomfortable shoes

Heels aren’t just uncomfortable; they’re also impractical in case of an emergency.

They can slow you down during evacuation and might even puncture the emergency slide.

Plus, your feet can swell mid-flight, making tight shoes miserable.

Slip-on sneakers, supportive sandals, or soft loafers are better options.

Bonus points for shoes that are easy to remove during security checks.

Strong perfume or cologne

You might love your signature scent, but your seatmate may not.

Fragrances can be overpowering in close quarters and can trigger allergies, migraines, or asthma in other passengers.

Opt for scent-free products or stick to subtle, lightly scented skincare.

Offensive or inappropriate clothing

Airlines reserve the right to deny boarding if a passenger is wearing clothing deemed offensive, vulgar, or inappropriate.

What counts as “inappropriate” is subjective, but it’s better to play it safe than risk getting pulled aside or asked to change.

Stick with neutral, respectful attire. Comfy doesn’t have to mean controversial.

Revealing clothing

If you’re a frequent flyer, you will know that it can get pretty cold on board.

A tank top may seem ideal while rushing through the terminal, but in the cabin, you’ll soon wish you had a warmer layer.

Wear or carry layers like a lightweight cardigan or hoodie, which can make a huge difference.
