“My Brother’s Keeper” actor Nkanyiso Mchunu has been released on bail following his arrest for allegedly assaulting his actress girlfriend, Masechaba Monnahela, about two weeks ago.
Mchune appeared at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, April 9, where he was released on R1 500 bail. He was also issued a stern warning.
The case will continue on Thursday, April 17, for the full disclosure of the docket.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, confirmed to “Sunday World” that both Mchunu and Monnahela have appeared in court and stated that the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) will decide the way forward.
According to online reports, Mchunu allegedly used open hands and clenched fists in the assault on Monnahela.
The incident allegedly escalated amid a backdrop of ongoing jealousy and accusations of infidelity.
Described online as a “brutal attack”, it has now entered a legal showdown as Mchunu opened a counter-charge against Monnahela for trespassing and malicious property damage.
Mchunu is well-known for his various characters on shows like “Uzalo”, “Umkhokha: The Curse” and Mzansi Magic’s “iThonga”.
In a previous online interview, Monnahela spoke publicly about the alleged abuse, detailing her experiences.
Monnahela disclosed that signs of trouble first emerged following a confrontation with one of Mchunu’s former partners.
“I went to his house and found the girl there. We had a quarrel, and that is when he first beat me,” she revealed.
“It did not end there. On his birthday, he pushed me to the floor. Since then, he would occasionally slap me. I found out that he is dating someone from the new production of ‘Ithonga’.”
Monnahela also said that Mchunu allegedly waved a knife during a confrontation.
“He is trying to make me come across as a maniac,” she stated in the online interview.
