Coach Jose Riveiro expressed pride in his players, highlighting their resilience and effective game management as key factors in Orlando Pirates’ 1-0 victory over Marumo Gallants on Sunday at Orlando Stadium.
The outcome meant the Pirates would advance to the final of the Nedbank Cup for the third successive year. Riveiro celebrated his team’s performance and unwavering spirit after their latest victory.
“Congratulations first to the players; they made a huge effort this week — playing three finals (games) in the space of seven days in the league, Champions League and Nedbank games,” said Riveiro.
“If we didn’t get the result, we were out, and they managed to show an interesting character and personality, going through all the problems, fatigue and pain. Whatever it takes, players are finding a way to win the matches — (Sunday) was one of those cases.
“I think we controlled the game very well, creating more than enough to score more than one goal, especially with more space in the second half. Marumo had to become a little more open and more exposed. I think overall it was a good game, a good performance, and fairly justified to be in the final.”
Riveiro underscored the depth of his squad, which he believes is packed with quality and a commendable desire to succeed.
“We have many players ready to go; that’s a good thing. That’s one thing I can feel optimistic about — what’s coming — because we have a big squad, a squad full of quality, a squad with experience, and the desire to do something special every season, and this season is no exception,” said Riveiro.
“It’s commitment; it’s feeling identified with what we’re doing as a team, as a whole. It’s wanting to help; it’s knowing that.”
