Police are investigating a case of armed robbery after three gunmen stormed Livingstone Hospital in Gqeberha and robbed security guards on duty

The incident took place in the early hours of Sunday morning.

It is not the first time the hospital has been robbed according to the Eastern Cape Department of Health, citing a similar incident in 2024.

Speaking about the most recent incident Department spokesperson Siyanda Manana said the three armed men allegedly entered through the main entrance, opposite Shoprite, and they then proceeded to rob the three female security guards who were seated inside the guard house.

“They pointed firearms at them and took their phones as well as the company cellphones. No staff or patient was affected during the incident,” said Manana.

Eastern Cape police spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge said a case of armed robbery was opened for investigation.

The Department said it would provide psychosocial support to the guards for them to deal with what happened.

Manana condemned what he labeled as ‘attacks’ on all healthcare facilities, which have become regular occurrences in Nelson Mandela Bay Metro.

He said that a similar attack had occurred at the institution last year.

“The Department will work hand in glove with law enforcement authorities to bring the culprits responsible to book.

“We implore everyone who might have seen or heard anything about the incident to please contact the police so that the perpetrators can be brought to justice.”

Manana said healthcare facilities must be protected at all costs because such incidents trample on our people’s rights to healthcare and safety at our institutions.
