Mkhonto weSizwe Party MP David “Mazolman” Skosana has confirmed he submitted a bit to purchase troubled KwaZulu-Natal club Royal AM, but his R15 million offer wasn’t enough to seal the deal.
The deadline to buy the Shauwn Mkhize-owned club was at 4pm on Monday
“We were told we would know by 4pm, but thus far we didn’t get any correspondence from the (Sars) curator, so it means we didn’t make it and we accept that,” Skosana said, as per the Sowetan.
“This was about the highest bidder and it is clear that ours was not the highest,” added Skosana, who is also a member of parliament.
“We were planning to relocate the club to KwaNdebele, but hopefully there will be another opportunity.”
Skosana added that despite the added financial burden they would have inherited, they were confident they would have managed to get the club out of troubled waters. “We were fully aware of the situation but felt we could rescue the team. We will keep on looking,” he said.
The club have been handed a transfer ban by world football governing body FIFA over the R15 million they owe to former striker Samir Nurkovic. That transfer ban resulted in the club fielding Andile Mpisane, the club chairman and owner Mkhize’s son in official league games.
As things stand in the Betway Premiership, relegation out of the top flight looks certain. Thwihli Thwahla are rooted to the foot of the table with just eight points. While most teams have between 12 and nine games left to play, Royal AM have played just 11 and were last in action in December.
