On December 26th last year, a FlySafair flight from Durban to Cape Town became the focus of controversy after Nobuntu “Nobs” Mkhize, then a brand manager at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), was involved in an incident that quickly went viral.
The Incident Unfolds
In an interview with Newzroom Afrika, Mkhize explained that the altercation began when she requested a lighter wine than the Merlot offered by the flight attendant.
According to Mkhize, the flight attendant insisted she take the Merlot, despite her preference for a lighter option.
Mkhize then asked to see the menu, which led to further escalation when the flight attendant refused to serve her any other options.
Escalation of the Situation
The situation intensified when the flight attendant returned with another crew member.
Footage from the incident shows Mkhize throwing a can at the flight attendant, followed by a scuffle with the crew and passengers who attempted to restrain her.
During the interview, Mkhize clarified that she was not intoxicated during the altercation, acknowledging that she had consumed one or two drinks in the airport Slow Lounge before boarding, but was not drunk.
She described her reaction as an “out-of-body experience,” stating she entered “animal mode” as the situation escalated.

Widespread Condemnation and Investigation
The incident sparked widespread condemnation. The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) launched an investigation into alleged racist remarks made during the altercation.
Political parties, including the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the Patriotic Alliance, took action.
The DA filed a crimen injuria and assault case against Mkhize, while the Patriotic Alliance lodged a complaint with the SAHRC.
FlySafair’s Response
In response to the incident, FlySafair condemned Mkhize’s behaviour, emphasising that cabin crew are licensed safety officers and that interfering with their duties is a criminal offense.
The airline also announced that Mkhize would be placed on their no-fly list, effectively banning her from future flights with them.
Consequences and Legal Actions
Following the incident, Mkhize was dismissed from her position at the SABC. She contended that her termination had occurred without a proper investigation and violated labour laws, announcing plans to challenge the dismissal in court.
Mkhize also apologised for her remarks towards people of colour during the incident, stating that she was not raised with such views and expressing regret for any offense caused. Reflecting on the events, Mkhize admitted, “I could have handled it better.”
