It’s matric dance season in South Africa, and all eyes are on a student’s heartfelt request that has captured the hearts of many.
Mollwane Madiba has been making headlines with his plea to have Grammy-award winning singer Tyla attend his matric dance.
As the country eagerly awaits the response to his invitation, Madiba’s story has become the talk of the town, with many rooting for the young fan’s dream to come true.
The student, who is also the son of Princess Tirelo Molotlegi of the Royal Bafokeng Nation, has been a longtime fan of the “Water” hitmaker, and she even attended his 16th birthday party.

In a quest to have the “Push 2 Start” hitmaker as his date, the student created a series of heartfelt TikTok videos that showcased his love for the artist.
But what started as a simple request has quickly gained momentum as the student got his friends, classmates and even his teachers involved to make his dream a reality.
In a video that gained over 200 000 likes, he featured students asking, “Who do you think Mollwane is taking to MD?” followed by all of them answering: “Tyla, obviously”, since it’s well known that he’s one of Tyla’s biggest fans.
As the video progresses, the question on everyone’s mind is: “Where on earth is Mollwane?” The suspense builds until he finally appears on screen, nervously but charmingly asking Tyla to be his matric dance date.

These videos involve not only students from his school but also various schools in South Africa as well as internationally.
Using TikTok as his platform, Madiba created humorous videos, using Tyla’s latest achievements, such as her Nike endorsement and her “British Vogue” cover, as inspiration.

From rallying his schoolmates to show their support to getting help from teachers in different schools, the student’s efforts quickly went viral, with his videos gaining impressive numbers.
