One of the suspects allegedly linked to the brazen Tuesday morning cash-in-transit (CIT) heist on the N2 highway was killed in a shoot-out with police.

According to KZN police spokesperson Robert Nethsuinda, police members followed up information regarding the vehicles that were spotted fleeing from the cash-in-transit robbery crime scene.

“The identified vehicle was intercepted at an intersection in Glenwood and the suspects opened fire towards the police.

“Police retaliated and during the shootout, one suspect was shot and fatally wounded and the other one was rushed to hospital with gunshot injuries.”

He said no police officer was injured during the shootout.

“The two suspects have also been positively linked with the triple murder case which happened at the Ntambanana policing precinct in January 2025 and another double murder case which was committed in June 2024 in the same area.”

He said with regards to Tuesday morning’s cash-in-transit robbery, another vehicle that was hijacked in the KwaMakhutha area and used in the robbery has just been found abandoned in Mariannhill, with what looked to be money bags inside.

“The crime scene is yet to be properly processed.”

ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said they responded to reports of a shooting and arrived on the scene to find two men believed to be suspects, had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

“One male was confirmed deceased on scene and another male is in a critical condition and is being treated by ALS Paramedics Advanced Life Support before being transported to a nearby hospital for further care.”

Jamieson said the roadway had been closed and advised motorists to find alternative routes.
