Tobias Schroeder, known as Tobi, is a 30-year-old entrepreneur originally from Germany. He has lived in Jeffreys Bay since the age of five.

With over a decade of experience, Schroeder has faced both successes and failures throughout his career. He owns several small businesses and is currently completing his MBA at the University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business.

The entrepreneur has a strong passion for adventure, surfing and travelling, and he enjoys exploring new business ideas, with a few exciting projects in the pipeline.

We spoke to Schroeder about travelling and his business pursuits.

What inspired you to create Surf Lodge SA?

The inspiration to create Surf Lodge SA came from my love for surfing, the ocean and the lifestyle of Jeffreys Bay. I wanted to give people the opportunity to experience all three.

The actual idea struck me when I worked as a surf instructor for Pure Surf Camps in Europe. After seeing their surf camps, lodges and business model, I had an aha moment.

I asked myself what do they have that we don’t have in South Africa? The answer was simple: nothing. We have it all here.

Who did you have in mind when creating the company?

I envisioned Surf Lodge SA as a place for anyone wanting to connect with the ocean, learning to surf and creating unforgettable memories. It’s a space for everyone – whether you’re seeking adventure, new friendships or just a unique escape.

When was the lodge created or built?

The lodge welcomed its first guests in 2015. I still clearly remember the nerves of that moment – what an incredible journey it’s been since.

You’ve travelled the world; why did you choose Jeffrey’s Bay to set up the lodge?

Jeffreys Bay is my hometown and offers some of the best waves for surfers of all levels. It’s also strategically located, combining a small-town vibe that guests love with close enough proximity to the airport and endless beauty and adventure.

With Schotia and Addo nearby, skydiving, bungee jumping, amazing hikes and breathtaking sunsets and sunrises, it’s the perfect location for anyone seeking an unforgettable experience.

But what truly sets Jeffreys Bay apart is the incredible sense of community. There’s no better place to meet welcoming, friendly people, and our guests often form amazing connections during their stay.

On top of that, Jeffreys Bay is a home to great restaurants, coffee shops and local stores that add to the experience and make every visit unforgettable.

What’s your favourite local and international destination?

My favourite local destination is Jeffreys Bay; it’s always special going back, especially since I’m spending most of my time in Cape Town at the moment. Internationally, my favourite destination is Norway.

Why should international travellers visit Surf Lodge SA and Jeffrey’s Bay?

International travellers bring immense value to both Surf Lodge SA and Jeffreys Bay. They contribute foreign currency to the local economy, benefiting not just the Lodge but also surrounding businesses like restaurants, shops and tour operators.

Their spending creates a ripple effect, supporting jobs and encouraging growth in the community.

By targeting adventurers who haven’t necessarily chosen their destination yet, we also help put Jeffreys Bay on the map as a prime location for surfing, nature, and adventure.

The presence of international guests enriches the town’s global reputation and showcases everything it has to offer to new audiences around the world.

What are some of the lessons you’ve learned on your entrepreneurial journey?

My entrepreneurial journey has taught me several key lessons. First, resilience is essential – challenges and setbacks are inevitable, but adapting and persevering make all the difference.

Second, people are at the heart of every business. Building the right team and strong relationships is critical to success.

Another important lesson is to start small but think big. Incremental growth, guided by a clear vision, often leads to sustainable success.

I’ve also learned the value of investing in the right places – whether it’s quality products, strong collaborations, or excellent services.

As my mentor once said: “Capital always follows vision.”

Build a strong vision and if there’s a good product-market fit, go shoot the lights out.

With summer around the corner, what can travellers expect to experience at your establishment?

Summer is exciting at Surf Lodge SA and we’re ready for an incredible season. Guests can expect a lively atmosphere with plenty to do.

There’s something for everyone, from surf lessons and yoga to activities like horse riding, elephant park visits, bungee jumping, cliff jumping and skydiving.

Jeffreys Bay is always a popular summer destination and we’re looking forward to seeing it fully booked again this year.

We’re focused on ensuring every guest has an unforgettable experience.
