The 2024 Earthshot Prize Awards lit up Cape Town with a dazzling array of eco-conscious fashion on the red carpet, where stars brought attention to global sustainability while embracing innovative designs.
Hosted by multi-award-winning stars Billy Porter and Bonang Matheba, the event saw appearances from global icons, including actress and Earthshot Prize Ambassador Nomzamo Mbatha. The evening was kicked off by a special Green Carpet pre-show on YouTube, hosted by Nigerian TV personality Ebuka Obi-Uchendu and South African rapper Nomuzi Mabena, also known as Moozlie.
Moozlie, the Green Carpet host, stunned in a look crafted by a South African designer. Her corset, made from animal leather offcuts, featured embellishments sourced from local goodwill stores, while her flowing custom skirt was crafted from pineapple leather, a vegan alternative that celebrates innovative textile production.
Nomzamo Mbatha, who also presented at the event, captivated attendees in a bold yellow gown dyed with Colorifix pigments, derived from biological DNA technology grown in bacteria. “This is no ordinary dress,” Mbatha shared, explaining that the Earthshot Prize 2023 Finalist Colorifix uses minimal water and energy while avoiding toxic chemicals.
Bonang Matheba graced the red carpet in a shimmering floor-length gown with a flowing bow, designed by Biji Couture. The designer shared that Bonang’s dress represents Earth’s elements: “This dress serves as a creative expression to raise awareness about environmental issues and conservation. The ribbon represents water and rivers, and the beaded dress symbolizes soil, telling the story of Earth’s precious resources.”
Rachel Kolisi, co-founder of the Kolisi Foundation, turned heads in a classic black off-the-shoulder gown, showcasing timeless elegance on the Green Carpet.
Nozipho, from the reality show Mommy Club, also made a stylish appearance, donning a green dress with a floor-length white scarf that completed her chic, earth-inspired look.
