Traffic is severely affected along the N2 south-bound in Amanzimtoti along the KwaZulu-Natal south coast, following a partial bridge collapse of the Umbongintwini River Bridge.
Ward councillor Andre Beetge said traffic is being directed through alternative routes.
The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (Sanral) said the bridge failure is as a result of the heavy rains experienced in the province this past weekend.
“Sanral specialist engineers are currently on site to assess the extent of the damage and remedial action to be taken. The south-bound carriageway over the bridge has been closed from Joiner Road and vehicles are being diverted to alternative routes. Motorists are advised to be cautious when approaching the site,“ said Sanral’s Vusi Mona.
KZN MEC for Transport, Sboniso Duma, said he has been briefed about the incident.
“I have been in constant liaison with the Minister of Transport, Barbara Creecy, as the executive authority responsible for the South African National Roads Agency. The minister has assured me that a team from Sanral is managing the matter as N2 bridge falls under the entity,“ he said.
“We continue to interact with the minister to accelerate the repair, maintenance and construction of our roads and bridges,” Duma added.
