Rapist, Rebaone Victor Moremong, 26, was given a sentence of life in prison after raping a 30-year-old woman.
The sentence was handed down by the Stilfontein Regional Court in the North West.
South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson, Colonel Adéle Myburgh said that Rebaone met the victim in the early hours of Saturday, May 1, 2021, at a local tavern in Jacaranda informal settlement, according to evidence presented in court.
He promised to give her money if she joined him in his shack.
“At his shack, he overpowered and assaulted the woman. Furthermore, he undressed and raped her. The woman fought back and managed to flee from the scene, where two unknown males in the street assisted her and took her to Klerksdorp Thuthuzela Centre,” Myburgh said.
Rebaone evaded capture for more than a year by hiding in Taung, but was eventually tracked down and apprehended in September 2022 in Jacaranda.
He appeared in court for the first time on Monday, September 19, 2022.
North West police commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, and the Director for Public Prosecution, Dr Rachel Makhari, welcomed the sentence and praised the Investigating Officer, Warrant Officer Dave Venter of the Klerksdorp Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit, and the Prosecutor, Chris Kok, for their teamwork in ensuring that the accused was convicted.
