In celebration of Heritage Month, we spotlight inspiring South African authors whose children’s books promote individuality and representation.
Sho Madjozi – Shoma and the Stars
In Shoma and the Stars, author Maya Wegerif, known as Sho Madjozi, introduces us to a spirited young girl who dances through life, even when her community disapproves. “This Shoma will dance wherever she wishes… When we fetch water, she’ll dance with the fishes; and after we’ve eaten, she’ll dance with the dishes!” As Shoma faces challenges, she ultimately proves to be a source of strength and support for her community. This heartwarming tale, beautifully illustrated by Katlego Keokgale, explores themes of adventure, friendship, and resilience.
Thabiso Sikwane – Modimo Wa go Rata (God Loves You)
The late Media Personality, Thabiso Sikwane’s book, Modimo Wa go Rata (God Loves You), is a heartfelt message for black children, emphasizing the importance of self-love and representation in children’s literature. Through her writing, Sekwane joins the chorus of voices advocating for the empowerment of young black readers, encouraging them to embrace their identity with pride.
Shudufhadzo Musida – Shudu Finds Her Magic
Drawing from her own experiences, former Miss South Africa Shudufhadzo Musida presents Shudu Finds Her Magic, a story that tackles issues of bullying and friendship. Aimed at children aged four to twelve, this book encourages young readers to discover their inner strength and uniqueness, fostering a sense of belonging and self-acceptance.
Salamina Mosese – Disaster at Gogo’s Spaza
Disaster at Gogo’s Spaza marks the debut of actress, Salamina Mosese as a children’s author. Originally conceived as an assignment during lockdown, the story—encouraged by her lecturer to be published—takes young readers on a whimsical adventure inspired by her daughter Tumi and her nieces and nephews. Mosese’s vibrant storytelling captures the joys and mischief of childhood, making it a delightful read for families.
Ntando Kunene – Cory’s In The Universe
Miss South Africa 2016, Ntando Kunene, co-authored Cory’s In The Universe with lecturer Thokozane Dyosini to help children navigate the complexities of the coronavirus pandemic. Available in all of South Africa’s official languages, this book targets children aged nine to fifteen, providing them with understanding and comfort during uncertain times.
Through their creative works, these South African authors not only entertain but also empower children to celebrate their individuality and cultural heritage. Their stories encourage young readers to embrace who they are and foster a sense of community and belonging.
