Benni McCarthy reveals what’s really wrong with Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford

Former Manchester United coach Benni McCarthy has revealed why Marcus Rashford has been struggling for consistency recently.

The Bafana Bafana legend was credited in helping the England international find his best form during the 2022/23 season, where he finished the campaign with 30 goals in all competitions.

Last season, however, Rashford only found the back of the net eight times as the entire squad struggled to get going.

Speaking to SuperSport Unplugged: UCL Reloaded on Friday, McCarthy revealed that the 26-year-old has too many people surrounding him, who were not honest with him.

“Obviously Rashy is special, a special player and a special human being. He’s Man United through and through,” McCarthy said on the video posted on YouTube.

“With me, with me it wasn’t ‘oh Rashy’ it was ‘Marcus’ with me. I was straight to the point and he respected that.

“Instead of sweet-talking him because I need him to score so the team wins for other reasons.”

“I was a straight shooter, and I don’t think he has enough people in his life who are straight with him because everyone tells him what he needs to hear and what he wants to hear, but I was normal and I think he appreciated that.”

McCarthy is currently back in South Africa having been let go by Manchester United after his contract expired.

He was heavily linked with the AmaZulu job following the sacking of Pablo Franco, but he revealed he was only in the country as a football pundit for SuperSport’s Champions League coverage.
