The Betway Summer Cup is an annual horse racing event hosted in the vibrant and energetic city of Johannesburg at Turffontein Racecourse. This year, GLAMOUR Magazine South Africa was announced as the media partner for the event, offering their expertise in all things fashion — including judging some of the best-dressed attendees on the day. The event is set to take place on Saturday, 30th November.
Together with 4Racing, GLAMOUR’s fashion director Tania Durand served as the creative director and stylist on a fashion editorial featuring Betway Summer Cups’ two prestigious ambassadors: crowned winners of the Miss South Africa pageant, Tansey Coetzee (2007) and Ndavi Nokeri (2022). They are both not only former title holders’ but also models with impeccable personal style and beauty, making them the perfect canvases for the stylistic vision.
The theme for this year’s race, ‘Silks in the City’, served as inspiration for the photo shoot’s creative team, with vibrant hues playing a dominant role throughout. Shot against the backdrop of Braamfontein, Tansey and Ndavi were each styled in looks that were bold, striking and chic, completed with accessories that complemented each outfit.
The team ensured that each outfit was modern and endowed with a level of comfort, which was of paramount importance, since it would allow guests to fully immerse themselves in the events of the day. Local designs were showcased along with our favourite retailers to offer attendees a variety of options.
Looking the part at the races can be achieved in a myriad of ways. Suits are an easy yet chic and comfortable option for a day at the races — for a fresh, relaxed take, ensure that the fabric is lightweight and the fit is slightly oversized. To add a touch of excitement to your look, incorporate a striking colour into your ensemble (which ensures you honour the theme of the Betway Summer Cup) and pair it with statement accessories to complete the look.
For the more adventurous race goer, a dress in a dynamic print or simply a bold, solid hue is a definite head turner and embodies the spirit of the city. But if you decide to veer towards a more demure aesthetic, choose an outfit that might be minimalist, but also shows off interesting details, as seen on Ndavi’s black dress by local Cape Town designer brand SELFI; the sculptured shoulder tassel details give the design a modern and fresh twist to the classic style.
