October is known as Mental Health Awareness Month and, in South Africa, most men suffer from mental health issues.
According to the South African Society of Psychiatrists, South Africa is number 10 on the list of countries with the most suicides. It is reported that there areĀ 23.5 suicides per 100 000 people. Of the 13 774 suicides reported in the country, 10 861 were amongst men.
To tackle menās mental health issues and, hopefully, reduce the number of suicides among men, John Craig, a menās fashion retailer, has started a conversation around the topics that affect men.
āMen often struggle with emotional and psychological issues but are less likely to seek help due to social pressures and long-held stigmas.
āBy raising awareness, we challenge these stigmas and encourage men to openly discuss and manage their mental health.
āHighlighting menās mental health can lead to better understanding and acceptance, reducing the barriers to accessing support,ā reads a statement from John Craig.
The retailer, together with Polo South Africa, has partnered with four influential male figures – Lucas Radebe, Kgaugelo Habyane, Tshegofatso Sephula and Leon de Beer – to release a five-part series called āMind Mattersā.
They will delve into various aspects of menās mental health, with each episode featuring a different expert with insights and personal experiences and actionable advice.
āThe brand wants to reach as many men as possible because early intervention can prevent the escalation of mental health problems but they also want to foster a culture of empathy and support.
āJohn Craig has always been on the front line of advocating for men and the mental health issues they may be faced with, the brand focuses on grooming and self-care by assisting men to find themselves again, from revamping their wardrobe to revamping what matters the most, their mental health,ā says the brand.
ā The series has already launched on YouTube with the next three airing on October 17, 24 and 31.
