Matthew Breetzke needs to be ready, says Proteas’ Shukri Conrad

Although the Proteas top six in their Test batting lineup appears to be quite settled, youngster Matthew Breetzke is next in line according to South Africa coach Shukri Conrad.

The Proteas take on hosts Bangladesh in a two-match Test series starting later this month, and with conditions likely to suit the spinners – the batsmen need to be up to task in the unfamiliar conditions.

The squad for the Bangladesh series was announced on Monday, and the bowling attack may be tweaked slightly as the top six batsmen seem to have cemented their places.

With Aiden Markram, Tony de Zorzi, Tristan Stubbs, skipper Temba Bavuma, David Bedingham and Kyle Verreyne looking set to take their position in the Proteas lineup, it appears that 25-year-old Breetzke will be carrying the drinks.

Ready for the call

Should he be called on in either Test though, Breetzke who has only played for the Proteas in T20 Internationals to date, needs to be ready.

“I made it very clear to Matthew when we took him to the West Indies that he’s the next batter up and nothing has changed,” Conrad told SportsBoom.

“It was great to see him coming in and perform the way that he did in that ‘A’ series. He knows he’s the next batter up. He’s got to wait his turn pretty much. I don’t know what more to say other than that he is the next batter up.”

“When I say he is the next batter I mean If anything were to happen to batters one to six, it would be Matt. He’s good cover because he can bat in the top order and he can bat in the middle order.”
