South Africa’s top TV executive producer, Duma Ndlovu, faced a setback on Tuesday when his attempt to block media coverage of his fraud and tax evasion case was denied. According to Sunday World, Ndlovu, known for producing popular soapies such as Muvhango, Uzalo, and Imbewu: The Seed, recently produced the drama series Queen Modjadji. He and his company, Ambroriteis, are accused of defrauding the South African Revenue Service (SARS) of R25 million in unpaid taxes.
Ndlovu appeared at the Johannesburg Commercial Crime Court, sitting at the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court, for a bail hearing. His attorney, Andre Kruger, argued that the media should be barred from the hearing, claiming that Ndlovu’s right to privacy could be violated. Kruger stressed that some confidential information could compromise Ndlovu’s security if made public.
However, the prosecution countered, pointing out that Ndlovu’s case was of public interest and that, as a well-known public figure, his trial was naturally a matter of concern to the broader public.
Ndlovu’s co-accused, who are not public figures, also expressed concerns, stating that media coverage of the bail hearing could negatively impact them and their families.
Magistrate Ramlal dismissed the request to bar the media, ruling that the case warranted public attention. “It is not my intention by means to gag the media on matters of public interest. I have considered that as the accused is a well-known TV producer or being in the public space,” Ramlal stated. He allowed the recording of the proceedings but ruled that no audio recordings would be permitted to protect sensitive information.
The bail hearing is ongoing, with Ndlovu continuing to face serious charges.
