The former KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Finance and ANC stalwart, Ina Cronje, has died.
Cronje, who was one of the few remaining members of the ANC from minority groups in the province, died on Tuesday in Durban after a long, undisclosed illness.
Cronje recently resigned as a member of the board of Trade and Investment KwaZulu-Natal (TIKZN) “in protest.”
That was after the contract of the entity’s immediate past chief executive officer, Neville Matjie, was not renewed by Siboniso Duma, the MEC for the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for economic development, tourism, and environmental affairs.
Cronje was the province’s MEC for finance between 2009 and 2014, serving under the premiership of Dr Zweli Mkhize and under Senzo Mchunu.
During her time, the province’s finances improved, and the provincial Department of Health, which was accused of overspending, was reigned in, bringing much-needed financial stability.
She was later replaced by Belinda Scott, another member of the minority group in the province.
After leaving politics, she started serving on the board of TIKZN, steering the state-owned entity to greater heights.
Although no official communication has been made by the Cronje family, understands that the board of TIKZN has been informed about the death.
In an internal board note seen by , the entity said, “It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Ms Ina Cronje.”
The note described her as a teacher, lawyer, and passionate politician.
