If you are black and you are taking Lisinopril or know someone who is taking it to treat high blood pressure, please read carefully:
I read about this earlier in the day, on Facebook, and decided to do my own research. I found that this has been in medical journals and even spoken about widely about the effects of lisinopril on black people. Many blacks have suffered from Angioedema (which can kill you quickly) caused by Lisinopril.
Angioedema is the swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue, & back of the throat (which is what can kill you). They are not educating blacks about the deadly side effects of Lisinopril. This is something you should discuss with your doctor or pharmacist.
I personally looked at the National Library of Medicine (Link provided below) on studies conducted on black people, namely Africa-AMrecians Vs non-African Americans and thus Africans vs non-Africans. The results were inconclusive.
Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor-based treatment regimens may not work as well at improving cardiovascular outcomes in black patients with hypertension compared with white patients, according to study findings published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
Although ACE inhibitors are commonly prescribed to lower blood pressure in patients with hypertension, previous findings from randomized controlled clinical trials suggested that ACE inhibitor-based treatment regimens may not yield the same benefits in black patients.
This on its own proves that there are different approaches to dealing with hypertension in black people compared to all other races.
ACE inhibitor-related angioedema is a serious and potentially fatal complication that is relatively rare in the general population but is more common amongst black/Afro-Caribbean patients.
So why is this drug still in circulation in black homes, prescribed by doctors and issued by pharmacists? The answer to this question is unknown to me, however, I can surely make this statement that is my opinion, that if it was the non-African Americans or the nonBlacks that had these symptoms, the drug would have attracted a more intense focus.
If you have a loved one, or if it is you that is managing hypertension with this drug, and you are black, please do see another specialist who can recommend something else for you.
