In Rushinga, Mashonaland Central Province, Zimbabwe, eight self-proclaimed prophets perished during a ceremony in a river.
On Saturday, October 30, prophets from the Vadzidzi vaJeso Apostolic sect drowned in the Mazowe River.
The tragedy occurred at 2 p.m. at the Hungumwe River, which flows into the Mazowe Tsvinje River, when the prophets went into a coma during their yearly Passover ceremony and pummeled into the river, drowning.
During a process to pick a baptist, the prophets competed to recover a “holy rod” from the deep waters of the river, according to local media.
Timothy Maregere, the provincial development coordinator for Mashonaland Central Province, verified the event and claimed their remains had been recovered.
“The group consisted of 10 ‘prophets’ and only two survived,” Maregere said.
Mashonaland Central deputy police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Naison Dhliwayo, on Sunday, named the now deceased as Nickson Singano (29), Peter Marera (31), Tendai Marera (28), Alexeio Makombe (26), Tichawana Katiyo (32), Isaac Dokora (21), Lanciot Dokora (34) and Chriswell Kunyengerera.
