Sad news gathered by Ghgossip suggests that the Mayor of Johannesburg, South Africa’s largest city and economic hub, Geoff Makhubo has died.

Makhubo was hospitalized for Covid-19 complications after a positive test result in late June, according to Mlimandlela Ndamase, the City’s spokesperson.

Sadly, he died of the virus at the age of 53 on Friday morning. Eunice Mgcina, a member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Health and Social Development, has been named interim mayor.

Mgcina in her tribute to the late Mayor said;

“We had hoped that Makubo would defeat the virus, return to work and lead the City as we face this pandemic that has devastated lives and livelihoods. Sadly, it was not to be.

“Our heartfelt condolences go to his wife, daughters, mother and the rest of his family, friends and comrades. The family has requested to be afforded privacy and space as they process the untimely passing of one of their own.”

In December 2019, after the ruling party wrested control of the city from an opposition coalition in December 2019, Geoff Makhubo took office.
