Muvhango’s Kertrice Maitisa Opens Up About Growing Up Without Black Friends! Kertrice is one of the new addition to Muvhango and the rising star is one to watch in the near future.

In a recent interview, Kartrice who moved a lot whilst growing up, opened up about how that affected her especially not having friends who looked like her.

Katrice lived in Mamelodi West before moving to Germany at the age of six and back to Mzansi, Cape Town when she was 10.

“Moving back home was exciting for me, except we moved to Cape Town and there were way more caucasians that side, limiting my interaction with black people. I didn’t have black friends, beside my cousins. It didn’t really worry me at that point because school kept me busy,” she said.

Kartrice says she only really understood issues like race and culture after watching a play called Rainbow Scars, a play about a black girl raised by white parents as a white person.

“I only confronted the issue of not having black friends or having missed out on other cultural experiences later. After high school, I realised what the reality is. That I had missed out on properly learning my mother tongue, Sepedi and learning things that are important in my culture and growing up in a community that reinforced who I am.”
