‘Muvhango’ actress Bontle Sithole has been left speechless by the condemnation of soapie viewers who judged her in real life over her sex tape storyline in the TV show.
According to Sunday World, the actress has said that her life as a student at the University of Johannesburg has been hell, since a plotline involving a leaked fictional sex tape featuring her character of Busi aired on ‘Muvhango’ a few weeks ago.
Bontle replaced actress Omuhle Gela when she went for a chance audition and was cast as the fifth Busi, who becomes infatuated with her professor, played by Tshepo Desando. Videos of herself and her professor having sex, which he recorded, then goes viral after they are leaked on the internet.
But the reaction of people on campus left the 19-year-old devastated, as many of them treated her like someone who had a leaked sex tape in real life.
Speaking to the publication, Bontle said of the trying ordeal: “I was on the verge of deregistering. It’s been hard for me, especially on social media, where the comments are posted and re-tweeted.”
“They always look at me in this weird way,” she added.
“It’s especially the older women working on campus. Many people believe everything they see on TV. I try to explain that this is a play, the storyline was meant for people to learn from it, especially young girls.”
Bontle, who is a first-year business management student, says it is mostly the females on campus who have been making her life difficult, so much so that the situation “got to a point where I just couldn’t handle it”.
She said, however, that she’s managed to deal with the situation, but that she would like to remind people that characters they see on TV are not actually people.
“I’ve overcome everything, I’m fine now,” she reassured.
“I hope the message has been loud and clear to the young girls – out there – for them not to be taken advantage of and to those who believe everything they see on TV is real.
“I hope this sets the record straight for them to chill.”
