Microsoft may start installing automatic updates for those who have not yet updated their Windows 10 to the latest version. The company already determines that upgrades are a requirement for those who want to maintain the company’s official support, but it can adopt such more aggressive measures to force the installation.
That’s because version 20H2 will only receive improvements until May 10, 2022 — after that, the system will be outdated without upgrades. If in three months, a machine still does not run 20H2, the computer will no longer be updated by Windows Update. It doesn’t matter if it’s the Home or Professional version, both will no longer be supported by the software giant at the deadline.
This strategy was adopted to eliminate the need to produce several individual changes for a large number of editions of Windows 10. In this way, only the most recent versions are covered and those who are still on the oldest are “invited” to move to the new ones, if you want to keep receiving security fixes, patches and improvements.

Those who intend to stay on Windows 10, instead of migrating to Windows 11, can rest easy for now, as it will not be necessary to upgrade to the latest. A lot of people still fear jumping to Windows 11 due to bugs, compatibility issues and reports of slowness faced by some users.
There is obviously the option of not updating anything and staying forever on version 20H2 or earlier, but it is worth remembering that this brings insecurity to the computer. Criminals can exploit loopholes in older editions to break into machines, steal data or install malware.
How to update to the latest version of Windows?
As the update to Windows 10 21H2 is free, you can update without fear of being happy. Just leave the system connected to the internet and restart it after the download is complete to have the brand new version.
You can also do a manual check: just search Windows Update and check if there are new versions available. The company guarantees that devices currently on Windows 10 version 2004 or newer will have a quick installation experience because the files will be installed as a monthly update.
Microsoft will use machine learning techniques to roll out the 20H2 Machine Update in the coming days to avoid issues when May arrives. Therefore, it is likely that outdated systems will begin to notice from now on a greater “insistence” of Windows update requests.
Windows 10 version 21H1 is guaranteed to be supported until December 2022, but 21H2 will have a lifespan until mid-2023, so just update now and have another year of peace of mind without having to do it again.
