This February, the miniseries premieres inventing Anna, based on a real case. The person involved in the story, however, stated that she does not intend to watch the Netflix production about her life.

inventing Anna is inspired by the life of Anna Sorokin, or Anna Delvey, a con artist who pretended to be heiress to a millionaire fortune and made millions of dollars from the New York elite, living a life of luxury.

The series stars Julia Garner, best known for the character Ruth from ozarkand directed by Shonda Rhimes, responsible for series like bridgerton and Grey’s Anatomy. The cast also includes Anna Chlumsky, Anna Deavere Smith, Anders Holm and Katie Lowes.

blows

the miniseries inventing Anna was conceived from an article by journalist Jessica Pressler on The Cut website. The text reveals how the fake managed to trick Manhattan’s millionaires and how her secret began to be discovered, resulting in her arrest.

Anna Delvey was charged eight times with theft and robbery and was sentenced to between four and 12 years in prison. The scammer was released in February 2021, but remains in US immigration custody due to US visa issues.

The series

Anna revealed in a recent interview that she will not watch the series because her story continues and is not just about crimes. The scammer says that she even received a visit from Julia Garner while she was in prison.

“While the world is weighing in on Julia Garner’s performance with my accent in inventing Annaa Netflix series about me, the real me is in a prison cell in Orange County, upstate New York, in quarantine isolation,” asks Anna.

She explains that the problem with her visa is that she stayed in the country longer than allowed, saying that this was not intentional and that the situation was out of her control. “Watching a fictionalized version of myself in this criminal asylum setting doesn’t seem appealing to me at all,” she adds.

Future

Anna also said that it took four years of production and hours of phone conversations, and that she thought that when the miniseries aired she would already be free, and the production was the closing of a long chapter of her life. Sorokin says the series can function as an afterthought of her dark past, but wonders if she will always be judged by her “20-somethings”.

inventing Anna premieres on Netflix on February 11.
