Thanos is now crueler than ever in the comics; understand the reason –

You know that talk that Thanos wants to eliminate half the population of the universe? While in the movies his motivation for genocide was to avoid excess lives, which in turn would lead to chaos (in his view); in the Marvel Comics he wanted to make this a gift to the entity that personifies Death, with whom he was in love. But eternals #9 undoes part of that idea.

Warning: spoilers ahead!

In the comic book released in the USA, with a script by Kieron Gillen and art by Esad Ribić and Guiu Vilanova, the Mad Titan besieges the deviant city of Lemuria in search of the eternal Phastos. Your troops decimate everything along the way. As Thanos presses Tolau and Thena for information on Phastos’ whereabouts, the deviant makes it clear that he is willing to die, as his death would be preferable to the terrible disease that afflicts him.

Though Thanos gets the information he wants, he moves to kill Tolau anyway. But then he changes his mind: “Killing you would be a mercy… and I won’t suffer the slander that I am merciful.”

Here, instead of the quick death he would have committed without blinking, he chooses to make Thena and her lover suffer. That is, the new story shows Thanos with a greater evil than his fans are used to seeing. He no longer wants to please Death or correct the universe, but to cause deliberate suffering.

Without the previous motivations, the Mad Titan’s ruthlessness now runs rampant. And it is with this new version of the villain that the Eternals will have to face in the pages of the HQ.
