A fundamental part of a vehicle, tires are much more than just a round accessory made of rubber. But do you know how many types of tires there are for cars, motorcycles, trucks? And which of them are the most suitable for each type of situation?
First, however, a little more about the importance of tires. For those who don’t know, they are responsible for supporting the vehicle’s weight, reducing the impact of holes in the ground, transmitting the engine’s torque to the ground and, with that, making the car move and using the resistance against the wheels to brake the vehicle.
In addition, it is the right tire that provides stability, comfort and even influences the autonomy of vehicles. In order not to run the risk of fitting the wrong tire and incurring unnecessary expenses, the Kenyannews lists the main types of tires for cars, motorcycles and other vehicles.

car tires
Let’s start by enumerating the different types of car tires. In this first segment, we will include, in addition to passenger cars, pickup trucks, such as Strada, Saveiro or Montana; light vans (vans) and SUVs, combined? So let’s go.
1. On-road tires (conventional)
As the name implies, it is the most common tire, suitable for everyday tasks and for paved terrain. This type of tire has smaller grooves, which provide greater contact with the ground. In other words, they increase adhesion and efficiency when draining water.
2. Off-road tires
Once again the name “deliveries” the main objective of the tire. Off-road is chosen by car owners with an adventurous spirit. Those who choose this type know that they are equipping the vehicle with tires with a wider tread, more reinforced and with wider grooves. After all, gravel, dirt and mud are certainly part of your daily commute.
3. Mixed Tires
The third among the main types of tires for cars are the so-called mixed ones. These are the most adopted by automakers to equip SUVs. The idea is that they are used more in urban areas, but that they also allow cars to venture through more muddy stretches.
Despite having an attractive design, this type of tire often raises the noise level and fuel consumption of cars.
4. Radial Tires
Another name often heard when we talk about types of tires are radials. And what are they? Radial tires are built with tougher treads and have great cornering grip and braking response. Therefore, they are the favorites for those who enjoy sports cars or sports cars. That is: for those who like to put their foot on the accelerator, preferably in the right places to do so.
5. Green Tires
The name says it all, doesn’t it? Green tires are those that have an environmental concern in their manufacturing process. They are lighter, last longer and produce less noise, in addition to helping to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
To close the package, they have great performance on wet roads, that is, it is difficult to aquaplan a vehicle equipped with this type of tires. They are preferred by automakers to equip most new electric cars.
6. Cargo Tires
Indicated for those who use pickup trucks to carry a lot of weight and for SUVs intended for this purpose, cargo tires can be marked with the letter “C” or with the acronym “LT” (Light Truck) right after the traditional measurements.
They are more expensive than the traditional ones, but they are more resistant and therefore suitable for this particular use.
truck tires
As with cars, there are also different types of tires for different truck uses. The first two, however, have exactly the same functions as those detailed for cars: off-road and mixed. In addition to them, there are three others, which we will mention below.
1. Low Severity
Equivalent to the on-road of common cars, the low severity tires are indicated for those who use the trucks on paved roads or expressways. They support less weight and less heat than other types.
2. Medium Severity
Indicated for trucks that usually make regional trips, the medium-severity tires are a parallel version of the mixed ones, as they are used for truck drivers who face roads and small urban sections during their trips.
3. High Severity
Indicated for trucks that carry very heavy loads, need to make difficult maneuvers, accelerate and brake constantly. In other words: contrary to what we might imagine, it is ideal for driving in the city, especially if the truck driver needs to make several deliveries a day, but over short distances.
motorcycle tires
Motorcycles also depend – and a lot – on the right choice of tires so as not to put the life of the rider and the eventual back at risk. After all, unlike cars and trucks, the motorcycle does not have any protection in the event of an accident.
Let’s go, then, to the main types of motorcycle tires.
1. Slick or Race
It is the type of tire most sought after by those who want to use the bike on the tracks. As the tread is smooth and without grooves, speed is guaranteed. But attention: this type of tire is not allowed for streets and highways.
2. Touring or GT
Made to be stiffer in the center and softer at the edges, it’s the ideal type of tire for heavier bikes and, especially, for travel. They are excellent for facing wet roads.
3. Street Radial
These tires are used by smaller motorcycles, up to 300 cc, and fall into the urban mixed category. They are the most common to find, as they have grooves until the end of the bandage, increasing grip, especially on uneven floors.
4. Mixed Double Compounds
They are from the same “family” as Street Radial tires, but more suitable for those who have motorcycles over 300 cc and, therefore, reach higher speeds.
