The fossil of an Ichthyosaur, a creature that lived about 180 million years ago, has just been discovered in the United Kingdom. The discovery of the animal, also known as a “sea dragon”, took place in the Rutland Water Nature reserve, and the specimen in question measured about 10 meters in length.
The reptile could measure between 1 and 25 meters, having lived in the seas with the dinosaurs. The fossil is the most complete of its kind found in the UK, and also the first Ichthyosaur of its kind. Temnodontosaurus trigonodon found in the country.
“Unprecedented”
The discovery was made during a routine drain in February 2021 by Joe Davis, conservation team leader at Rutland Wildlife Trust. The excavation was led by paleontologist Dean Lomax, who has studied thousands of Ichthyosaurs.

“It is a truly unprecedented discovery and one of the greatest discoveries in British paleontological history,” says the expert, who points out that it was an honor to lead the excavation. The Ichthyosaurus will continue to be studied by the researchers and will be taken to a conservation site. In the future, it will be returned to the place of origin for exhibition.
