Mozilla Firefox 96 has just been released to bring few improvements, although it comes with small tweaks specific to those who use the browser on Linux. The main addition was perhaps in terms of security, with the addition of an improved cookie policy.
Firefox 96 now has the “Same-Site=lax” setting enabled by default, which, according to Mozilla, provides a solid first line of defense against attacks like Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF). This tactic is used by crooks in spoofing the data request on fake websites but with the same appearance as their real counterparts.
In the audiovisual area, the organization has made significant improvements to better suppress noise, enable automatic gain control and improve echo cancellation for those who want to play media in the browser. The tweaks were introduced into Firefox’s built-in media capture and streaming API used in WebRTC.

As a result, it is possible to say that the browser should no longer downgrade the screen sharing resolution, something that occurred with some users in previous Firefox builds.
Firefox improvements on Linux
The browser has brought an adjustment that will identify when the Linux machine is low on memory. Upon detection, browser tabs can be automatically put to rest to avoid system overload and free up resources for other tasks.
Also on Linux, the program changed the shortcut for the “Select All” option from Alt + A to Ctrl + A. The feature itself remains the same, but this small adjustment can impact those who dispense with the mouse when browsing the web.
For those who want to use the light Firefox theme, there is good news. Previously, the window control buttons were “invisible”, which discouraged many people from using the skin. Now the issue is resolved and the minimize and maximize icons are visible when using Firefox Light on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS.
How to download firefox 96
Mozilla Firefox can be updated to version 96 by the browser itself:
- Click on the three-dash menu
- Look for the “Help” option
- Locate and press “About Firefox”
- Wait for the system to download the update automatically
- Restart the browser for the update to deploy
If you’re not a browser user yet, you can download it directly from Firefox’s official website or from the Microsoft Store for Windows users — although they’ll have to wait a little longer because the software hasn’t been updated yet. Those who use the program on Ubuntu can follow the usual routine or wait for the update in the background, if they use the Snap version.
