National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) inaugurated the Control Objectives for Information and Related Technology (COBIT 5) National Implementation Committee at the NITDA headquarters in Abuja.
The inauguration is part of the Agency’s role to foster IT industry standards and best practices in the country.
COBIT 5 was introduced and adopted in Nigeria as a National framework of IT standards on December 4, 2013 under Section 6 of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) Act of 2007.
Its implementation across government is now being coordinated by NITDA as the IT regulator and development Agency for Nigeria.
Giving a background on COBIT 5, the director general represented by Dr Vincent Olatunji, director, Corporate Strategy and Research said that COBIT 5 has been gradually implemented in the past three years, in which NITDA has been meeting with sector regulators to draft a framework and building capacity towards its implementation.
NITDA as the Agency responsible for developing, monitoring, regulating and creating framework for the usage of ICT in the country, the DG reaffirms that COBIT 5 is a globally accepted framework for IT governance based on industry standards and best practices.
Adding that the document is a comprehensive framework that assists enterprises to achieve their goals and deliver value through effective governance and management of enterprise IT.
Inaugurating the committee on COBIT 5, NITDA led down strategies and processes for implementing the framework which includes: domestication of the framework to become relevant to the Nigerian environment and meet the developmental and service improvement aspirations of the country; continuous consultations with various industry regulators and stakeholders; setting up a national implementation committee that comprises various sector regulators; developing a generic regulatory framework (COBIT.ng) that shall be the instrument for the domestication of the COBIT 5 framework in Nigeria.
Members of the committee were drawn from various MDAs comprising of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), National University Commission (NUC), National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Security and Exchange Commission (SEC), Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC), Nigeria Electricity Regulation Commission (NERC), National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA).
