The Registrar and Chief Executive of the Teachers’ Registration Council of Nigeria, TRCN, Prof. Josiah Olusegun Ajiboye, has said despite the growing awareness of technology, it won’t replace the services of teachers in the teaching profession, emphasizing that it could rather boost their academic planning and teaching.
Prof. Ajiboye who stated this at the 5th induction ceremony of the Federal College of Education, Eha-Amufu, Enugu State, added that Nigeria needs 21st century teachers that are conversant with the use of technological tools to achieve effective and efficient planning, teaching and learning, which could even start from home, emphasizing that teachers should abreast changes in the educational sector to remain afloat In their profession.
“Technology will not replace teachers. It is only those who do not know how to use technology that can be replaced by those who know how to use it. The era of analogue as a teacher is gone. Teachers who are technological compliant cannot be pushed to the background,” he said.
The Registrar who was appointed as the TRCN boss in August this year, to replace Prof. Addison Mark Wokocha, disclosed that the council is partnering Federal Government through Federal Ministry of Education to improve teachers’ quality across the country and to attain professionalism in teaching, stressing that the National Council on Education has already agreed on this, bearing in mind that teachers’ quality is a necessary tool for promoting human capital development in the country.
Earlier, the Provost of the College, Prof. Benjamin Ndubuisi Mbah, noted that the council’s decision to induct members at graduation is a welcomed development, as this helps in actualizing the professionalisation of teaching as obtained in other professions. The exercise he said, is an indication that teaching is no longer an all comer’s affairs, adding that induction will restore the dignity of teachers.
