Adriano Panatta criticizes Wimbledon: “Seeds are scandalous”

Wimbledon, the third Grand Slam of the season, has finally begun. It will be a special edition, due to the war Russian and Belarusian tennis players were excluded and for the occasion, the world number one Daniil Medvedev will be missing.

There will be no other major tennis players in the men and women’s Tour, such as Andrey Rublev and Aryna Sabalenka. It was an edition that has already aroused a lot of controversy up to now. The ATP, in recent weeks, has announced that there will be no points for the tennis players who will participate in this tournament and there will be only the prize pool at stake.

At the same time, however, the tennis players will lose the points earned last year, bringing this Wimbledon to be a real handicap for some tennis players. Matteo Berrettini, very skilled on the London lawns, will lose several positions even risking to come out of the world Top 20.

Adriano Panatta and the critique of the seeded order

This will also be the second year that Wimbledon will respect the ATP ranking with regards to the order of the top seeds. In the past the criterion concerned the results kept on the grass for each tennis player while now the ranking is followed.

A criterion that does not go down to a former tennis champion, the Italian legend Adriano Panatta. Through his social media channels Adriano Panatta has literally defined the order of the tournament seeds as scandalous, a criterion that penalizes Matteo Berrettini and not just a little.

Following the old criterion, as Adriano points out, Berrettini would be the third seed, immediately behind the legends (almost out of class) Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, instead Berrettini is the number 8 seed and could therefore get a more complicated draw.

Panatta says about him about the seeds and says that the Polish Hubert Hurkacz was also penalized, as he could have been number 4 seed (in his opinion) and instead will only be number 7 seed. Meanwhile, today we start, at lunchtime Novak Djokovic will take the field and there is also curiosity for the blue number two Jannik Sinner, struggling in the first round against former Slam champion Stanislav Wawrinka.

Here is the quite clear tweet of Adriano Panatta:
