Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios admits he is not looking forward to playing doubles at Wimbledon as he believes that using the best-of-five-sets format for the Wimbledon doubles event is the “stupidest thing ever.”
Earlier this year, 27-year-old Kyrgios became a Grand Slam champion after he and Thanasi Kokkinakis won the Australian Open men’s doubles title. Kyrgios and Kokkinakis didn’t play doubles together at the French Open but they are set to return to action at Wimbledon.
In the Wimbledon first round, Kyrgios and Kokkinakis face Aljaz Bedene and Sonwoo Kwon. “To be honest, I’m not really looking forward to playing best-of-five set doubles,” Kyrgios told Tennishead when asked about playing the doubles draw.
“I think it’s the stupidest thing ever, to be brutally honest. No one wants to play best-of-five sets doubles. No one wants to watch best-of-five sets doubles”.
Kyrgios backed to do well at Wimbledon
Kyrgios is having a good grass season, having reached back-to-back semifinals in Stuttgart and Halle.
His Wimbledon partner feels he could definitely make a splash at The All England Club this year. “He’s a legit contender,” Kokkinakis said. “He looks great. He looks like he’s locked in. I had a look at his draw and I really like it for him.
Obviously, Slams are tough but with his game and how comfortable he is on grass and how many matches he’s played, I think he can definitely make a big run here. I’m pretty confident in that. There are a lot of good players out there, especially it being over five sets.
There’s a lot of things that can happen over five sets. It’s tough to put people away in straight sets and the hardest thing is backing up matches after matches. But the key thing for him is if he can get it done fairly comfortably, especially in his earlier rounds, I think that sets him up really well”. Kyrgios was drawn to play Paul Jubb in the Wimbledon first round.
