Former Super Eagles’ defender, Yisa Sofuluwe, has called on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and Flamingoes technical crew to organise quality warm up games for the country’s women junior national team (Flamingoes) to ensure the nation did not record another failure at the FIFA Women U-20 Cup slated for Papua New Guinea.
The FIFA U-20 Women Cup will hold from November 13 to December 3, and Sofoluwe believes exposing the Falconets to good tune up games would ensure the team did not embarrass Nigerians the way the Flamingoes did at the on-going Women U-17 Cup in Jordan.
He posited that the Falconets could excel in the Cup because the team would parade exposed and hungry players, but he pleaded with the NFF to help the Falconets to come out as heroines in Papua New Guinea.
“The Falconets need to play quality games to compete favourably at the U-20 Cup. It was quite disappointing that the U-17 girls crashed out early in Jordan, but this does not remove the fact that we still have talented female players in Nigeria. The Falconets can excel in the Cup if well-tailored preparation programme is mapped out for the team,’’ he said.
On Tuesday, Falconets Head Coach, Peter Dedevbo, picked Sunday as deadline for his overseas-based players to arrive in camp for the U-20 Cup preparations.
The quartet of Belarus-based star, Aminat Yakubu, Uchenna Kanu (USA), Valerie Awelewa (Belgium) and Chinwendu Ihezuo (Kazakhstan) are expected to join their home-based counterparts in camp this weekend to intensify preparations for the championship.
Europe-based goalkeeper, Christy Ohiaeriaku, is already competing for a place in the team with the home-based shot stoppers.
