John McEnroe gives his verdict on Cori Gauff’s Grand Slam potential

American tennis legend John McEnroe is high on Cori Gauff’s potential as he is confident the 18-year-old has what it takes to win multiple Grand Slams. Gauff, ranked at No 7 in the world, made her first Grand Slam singles final during last year’s French Open.

Unfortunately for Gauff, she had to play Iga Swiatek in the final – who was on absolute fire during that period last year. Even though Gauff suffered a 6-1 6-3 defeat to Swiatek, making a Grand Slam final at 18 was a big breakthrough.

McEnroe feels Gauff definitely has the potential to win Grand Slams but underlined the 18-year-old still needs to improve her game and get better in certain areas. “We’re all looking forward to seeing what happens with Coco Gauff and looking at her career trajectory, it’s been great.

It hasn’t happened as fast as some people think, but it’s still an upward trajectory. Okay, she didn’t have a great WTA Finals, but all in all, she made some great progress. She got to a French Open final, she has improved, obviously, she needs to improve more.

She will – she’s 18. There is a huge upside that includes winning majors,” McEnroe told Eurosport.

Gauff sets eyes on the Australian Open title

After finishing as runner-up at the French Open, Gauff was hoping to win Wimbledon or the US Open.

Unfortunately for Gauff, that didn’t come as Gauff suffered a Wimbledon third-round defeat against Amanda Anisimova. In the final Grand Slam of the 2022 season, Gauff reached the US Open quarterfinal before losing to Caroline Garcia.

Now, Gauff is preparing for her fourth Australian Open appearance. Gauff enjoyed her best Australian Open in her tournament debut in 2020, when she made the round-of-16 before losing to Sofia Kenin. Gauff didn’t impress at Melbourne Park in the last two years as she suffered second and first-round defeats, respectively. It remains to be seen if Gauff can make it all the way at this year’s Australian Open.
