Ashleigh Barty has won the Newcombe Medal, an award that Tennis Australia awards to her best representative, for the fifth time in a row. The former WTA number one decided to retire at the age of 25, just after winning the Australian Open in early 2022.
“There is no right way or wrong way. There is my way and now is the perfect time to announce my retirement. It’s difficult, but I’m happy with the choice. And I’m ready to quit tennis,” wrote Barty in an emotional post published on her social media accounts.
Several users harshly criticize Nick Kyrgios on social media
Considering the premature retirement of her countrywoman and the results achieved during this season, Nick Kyrgios did not accept the decision made by Tennis Australia, willingly and sparked a controversy through his Instagram profile.
“No respect. I don’t give a f***!” wrote the Australian bluntly. Reading Kyrgios’ comment with surprise, some tennis fans condemned his words and expressed different points of view on the web. “A decent person would have posted the same picture and congratulated Ash.
He would have written something about how Barty has managed to make Australia proud and wished her the best. But, of course, Nick is just selfish and a c……e. This big kid needs to grow up,” wrote one anonymous Reddit user.
“He’s not a bad guy, but an irritated crybaby,” we can read in the comments. And again: “I doubt that the best tennis players would publish a post dedicated to the award to cause controversy and not to congratulate the winner.
He is an insecure tennis player.” Kyrgios conquered the Australian Open in doubles and reached his first Grand Slam final at Wimbledon in 2022. Novak Djokovic thought of putting an end to his dream on the lawns of the All England Club, who triumphed in four sets and won the Grand Slam number 21 in his career.
