Hero World, a Scottie Scheffler’s opportunity

The most particular event of the entire PGA Tour calendar is staged in Albany. It is written Hero World Challenge, it reads a parade of great names. In fact, there are only twenty participants, but all of immense quality: the best available according to the world rankings, the defending champion, the winners of the Majors and two men specially chosen by the Tiger Woods Foundation (not by chance, next to the tournament you always read ” Hosted by Tiger Woods”).

Hero World Challenge, schedule

Five times the golfing legend has won this event, but just last night he forfeited. Plantar fasciitis prevents Tiger from competing, but his plan remains to be at The Match and the PNC Championship.

Scottie Scheffler’s run remains a source of great interest, as he has possible combinations to take back the global leadership by taking it from Rory McIlroy’s hand. The winner of the last edition is the Norwegian Viktor Hovland, the first success of his career here.

Overall, from 2016 to today and considering a year of stop from Covid (2020), the last American to soar was Rickie Fowler in 2017. He holds the record over 18 holes: 61 strokes in the winning year. Of the 72, however, Jordan Spieth made 262 in 2014.

We return to the Bahamas, to the Albany Golf Club, on the course designed by Ernie Els, which is hosting the event for the seventh time. It is a par 72 on which strategy counts a lot, given the large presence of water, dips and, overall, something that closely resembles the style of the links.

There are five par 5s and as many par 3s. And it is curious to note that, with the exception of the Spaniard Jon Rahm in 2018, four of the last five winners have finished at -18. No FedEx Cup points are awarded, but there are four former FedEx Cup winners in the field.

Scott Alexander “Scottie” Scheffler (born June 21, 1996 in Dallas, Texas) is an American professional golfer who plays on the PGA Tour. As of July 2022, he is the first place in the world golf rankings. He first achieved that spot on March 27 after winning the WGC-Dell Match Play Championship.

That win, in turn, came weeks after his first win on the PGA Tour at the WM Phoenix Open in February 2022.[2] He then went on to win his fourth tournament of the year and his first major tournament at The Masters Tournament, 2022. He competed in the 2021 Ryder Cup.
