England rugby star Marland Yarde has apologised for the ‘distress’ he has caused after he was cleared by police following an arrest.

In a lengthy statement posted to social media, Yarde confirmed he was the subject of a police investigation relating to a ‘very serious offence’. The wing is understood to have left Sale Sharks – who employed him at the start of the year – amid the arrest.

England international Yarde is now looking to return to action with a new team in the Premiership. Posted to Twitter, his statement read: “In January, as I think is known by some of the rugby community, I was arrested on suspicion of having committed a very serious offence.

“A necessarily lengthy police investigation followed but I can now confirm that no further action is to be taken against me. I have not been charged with any offence.

“Whilst I never doubted my innocence, I understand that the investigation had to be handled with care and sensitivity for the protection of all involved. Although innocent of the crime alleged against me, I take full responsibility for having put myself in a situation where an allegation could be made against me.

“I am working hard to improve myself as a person using what the incident has taught and shown me. I want to apologise to all my family and friends for the hurt and distress I have caused them.

“I look forward to resuming my career doing what I love which is playing rugby.”

Yarde had scored two tries in nine appearances for the Sharks last season while he also spent time on the sidelines after suffering a shoulder injury. The 30-year-old left previous club Harlequins with a tattered reputation following reports he had missed three training sessions.

Prior to joining the Sharks in 2017, Yarde had previous stints at London Irish, Harlequins and spent time on loan at London Welsh. He also tallied 13 caps for England between 2013 and 2017, scoring 40 points for the first-team.
