Felix Auger-Aliassime comments on beating Mexican wildcard in Los Cabos

Felix Auger-Aliassime said 521st-ranked Alex Hernandez was definitely not an easy opponent to play against in his Los Cabos opener. On Wednesday, second-seeded Auger-Aliassime kicked off his Los Cabos Campaign with a 6-3 7-5 victory over Mexican wildcard Hernandez.

“It was a good match, intense,” Auger-Aliassime said after the win, per the ATP website. “It’s not easy to play a local, a Mexican. He was playing really well. He was giving everything he had to make it a tough match and to try to win.

Credit to him for playing a good match. I will definitely remember this one — it was a bit tense.”

Auger-Aliassime closed out Hernandez in straight sets

Auger-Aliassime got off to a strong start as he claimed the first break in the second game and then held on to his serve the rest of the set to win the opener.

. After winning the first set, Auger-Aliassime got broken twice at the start of the second set as Hernandez led 5-2 through the seven games of the set. Just when it seemed the match would go three sets, Auger-Aliassime claimed back-to-back breaks and won five games in a row to complete a straight-set win.

Now, Auger-Aliassime plays Steve Johnson in the Los Cabos quarterfinal. Elsewhere, Auger-Aliassime’s fellow compatriot Denis Shapovalov continued his rough stretch as he was bounced in his Washington opener. USA’s J.J.

Wolf sent Shapovalov packing out of Washington, handing the Canadian a 6-2 6-7 (5) 6-3 loss. “I felt pretty good. I played a pretty solid match,” Wolf said after the match. “There are some things that I could do better, but after kind of being in a boot for a couple of weeks, not playing too much, then kind of starting up again last week, and also coming into the tournament not really sure how my foot was going to feel, I have to be really happy with how it felt and how I played. Considering the preparation leading in, I felt it was a really solid match.”
