Nick Kyrgios says he is excited to be teaming up with Jack Sock for the Washington doubles event but admits he is also feeling pressure whenever he is playing alongside the American. Sock, a four-time Grand Slam champion in doubles, is considered as one of the best doubles players in the world even though his primary focus is on singles and he is just occassionally playing doubles.
Kyrgios and Sock, who debuted as a team in 2015, have played at least once per year in seven of the last eight seasons. In 2018, Kyrgios and Sock won the Lyon doubles title. “It’s happening [and] I am super excited.
I love playing with Jack because he is hands down the best player in the world, but at the same time I hate playing with him because there is so much pressure on me because he wins with absolutely anyone he plays with,” Kyrgios said.
“But I got that monkey off my back in Lyon [in 2018], we got a title under the belt in Metz. I can tell me grandkids I got a title with the best doubles player in the world”.
Sock on teaming up with Kyrgios
Kyrgios and Sock will be playng alongside each other for the second time this season.
In April, Kyrgios and Sock played together in Houston, where they suffered a surprise quarterfinal loss to Matej Sabanov and Ivan Sabanov. “I’ll take it, coming from the guy who just made the crazy run at Wimby, one of the most talented in the world as we know.
Probably the most talented basketball player in the world,” Sock said. “Nick and I gel so well together on the court. On and off the court we have a blast, we have been friends for a long time off the court, starting with video games and here we are”.
Kyrgios has had doubles success this year as he became a Grand Slam champion at the Australian Open this year. In front of their home crowd, Kyrgios and his good friend Thanasi Kokkinakis won the Australian Open men’s doubles title. Kyrgios hasn’t won any doubles titles since.
