USA’s Maxime Cressy, 25, said it was “incredible” to win his first ATP title at the same place where he made his ATP debut. On Sunday, Cressy recovered from a set and a break down to beat Alexander Bublik in the Newport final 2-6 6-3 7-6 (3).

12 months ago, Cressy made his ATP debut on the grass courts of Newport. A year later, Cressy returned to Newport and lifted his first ATP title on the same courts where he made his ATP debut. “It’s an incredible feeling to win my first title, I never thought I would win it this way,” Cressy said, as quoted on the ATP website.

“I played my first ATP tournament here, and it’s always an incredible atmosphere. There were a lot of ups and downs today but I’m very proud of myself for fighting through it”.

Cressy wins his first title, reaches a new career-high

Following his Newport victory, Cressy rose to a career-high ranking of No.

33 in the world. Cressy is now set to be seeded at the US Open as he is aiming to have a big summer hard court swing. “That was my first goal, to be seeded at the US Open, so I’m glad it’s already accomplished.

It’s incredibly special to see the success coming and that the hard work is paying off. It’s the most fulfilling feeling and I’m really looking forward to more,” Cressy added. En route to winning Newport, Cressy defeated three fellow Americans and Kazakhstan’s Bublik.

After beating three Americans (Mitchell Krueger, Steve Johnson and John Isner), Cressy appeared to be on the verge of losing the Newport final. Bublik absolutely dominated the first part of the match, having led 6-2 3-0.

Just when it seemed Bublik would easily win the Newport final, Cressy started playing much better and stormed back to win in three sets.
